The emergency relief effort that ensued following the destruction unleashed by Typhoon Morakot left a deep and lasting impression on a group of teenagers. The experience forced them into deep reflection, from which they realized the community desperately lacked awareness over disaster prevention and relief. This discovery motivated the group members to undergo specialized training in disaster rescue, who after obtaining formal certification, began to devote themselves to safeguarding the ecological environment in the local community. Overflowing with emotion, Zeng Li-yen (曾麗雲), a member of ‘Love Jianxian Association’, who returned home from Northern Taiwan after the Morakot disaster, was deeply moved and decided to tell the story of the kids.

Although this group of kids began with disaster rescue training, they have not only gone on to participate in conservation projects to protect the local environment, but also organized disaster prevention awareness camps, entirely of their own initiative. A few days ago, in recognition of their assiduousness, the kids, many of who have already received professional certification in disaster relief, were granted an audience with Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊).

In order to keep a record of the activities, the group has been using simple cameras on their mobile phones to film the activities. As the quality of such devices is rather inferior, I would like to call on the public for support; regardless of whether the device is new or second hand, it would be warmly welcomed, and allow the kids to make a more complete record of their activities.”
