https://www.peopo.org/news/373139

Tainan Houbi WUMILE~ Jingliao Village Farmer’s Meal
The Farmer’s Meal consists of only the best and authentic local dishes prepared by our lovely village mum. During harvest season, friends and family of the farmers’ help collect the crop as extra labour is needed. They are then invited to feast with the Farmer’s Meal in exchange for their hard work. (Back in the 1950’s, farmers had poor economic ability as rent for land & water, together with the need to purchase fertilizers and pesticides resulted in high operating cost. Farmers in general were unable to pay the wages for extra labour, hence the best that they can do is to seek help from their friends and family to help with harvest collection). During lunch break on the day of collection, the farmer’s family will carry the dishes right into the heart of the paddy field where all the workers will have a Farmer’s Meal feast. Once the collection is completed, the workers will head to the farmer’s home to enjoy a Thanksgiving Meal, as they thank God for bringing them good weather and peace. (The Thanksgiving Meal is considered an annual celebration the people look forward to. As earning money back then was difficult, villagers usually feed on only sweet potato rice/porridge with pickled vegetables and fruit daily.) Therefore, we should appreciate and enjoy every bowl of it! Farmer’s & Thanksgiving Meal include: - 1. Fragrant rice 2. Seasonal vegetables 3. Egg omelette 4. Braised pork 5. Stir-fried celery with squid 6. Stir-fried sweet potato leaves 7. Stir-fried cabbage 8. Steamed fish 9. Steamed chicken 10. White radish & bone soup 11. Winter melon tea
