Taiwan High-Speed Train Systems encountered some unknown digital signal issues that caused the whole high-speed railroad was totally shutdown about five hours yesterday (April 25, 2013).

This is one real bad example of using Digital Network Real-Time Control, even there are redundant systems (Primary and Backup Systems).
I am not against using Digital Network Real-Time Control.
One of my expertise is High-Availability Redundant Systems.
However, they could not guarantee 100% working because there are too many of the combinations of input signals that are very difficult to consider all of them during the designs and testings.
From the beginning, my real concerns are Using Digital Network Control on the TaiPower Nuclear Power Plant, even though GE has not done this on a Real Nuclear Power Plant over the past 60 years.
I asked this big issue so many times.
However, Taiwan Power Company, AEC, and some NE-ESS professors have not answer this big issue at all.
If these people could not wake up, and they could not handle this big issue seriously (by an real independent testing team), what they say that the TaiPower Fourth Nuclear Plant is Safe is just misleading and cheating the People of Taiwan.

重開機沒解決問題 專家籲重建SOP

〔記者曾鴻儒/台北報導〕高鐵昨天首度非天災停擺,最後只能以「重開機」方式恢復營運,並未徹底解決問題,專家直言,主系統與備援系統同時失靈時如何應變及提前避險機制等環節,高鐵都應重新建立SOP。
昨天導致高鐵停擺的禍首,是高鐵人員在維修更換台中站區鐵軌旁的號誌電子聯鎖系統(EI)的零件「終端轉換器(ET2)」後,出現無法排除異常訊號,且主系統、備援系統同時掛點,導致營運停擺。
電子聯鎖系統如高鐵眼睛
EI是高鐵運轉最重要的一環,高鐵全線三四五公里,設有十處號誌聯鎖區間,每處各有一套EI主系統與備援系統;其功能是在區間內的不同轉轍器與號誌機間,設立一套聯鎖運行的規則,以確保列車安全、順暢的運行。
