Helpless Chishang farmers face another year of crop failure

Following weeks of baptism in this year’s rainy season, over the last two days, the rain has finally begun to relent in the East Rift Valley (台東縱谷). Thanks to the extensive rice fields and undulating mountains of Chishang (池上), the area is bathed in an ocean of greens and blues, the drifting clouds of the eastern Haian Mountain Range (海岸山脈) forming a breathtaking pastoral scene.

Recently, however, newly formed rice tassels began abnormally displaying signs of yellowing; evidence that rice blast is attacking the crops. Another year of failed harvests will no doubt be a source of great dismay for Chishang rice farmers.

台東縱谷經過了多日來梅雨的洗禮，這兩天終於雨勢和緩了下來，池上地區的稻田和山巒，呈現出一片翠綠的景象，和東方海岸山脈的白雲構成一幅欣欣向榮的田園景象，但是令人擔憂的是正當抽穗完的稻子竟然出現枯黃的病態，原來稻熱病正侵襲著池上關山的稻米，今年稻米的空包彈又要讓老農傷心了。
