Flying squirrel protection success in Dingben Community
Dingben Community (頂笨仔社區), which lies in Zhuqi Township (竹崎鄉), Chiayi County (嘉義縣), is promoting the long-term conservation of flying squirrels. In order to achieve this aim, local residents began by building nest boxes and monitoring platforms to reestablish the local squirrel population. In the next stage, human intervention was gradually withdrawn and the squirrels were allowed to rely on their own natural survival instincts.
In 2005, Dingben established a cultural development association and organized a twelve-person patrol group. Currently, almost the entire community has joined the fight in protecting the animals’ safety. In recent years, with the help of outside guidance, the community has begun developing ecotourism, taking tourists on night tours to see the squirrels. Dingben Community has chosen a wise direction, allowing ecotourism to not only build strong community awareness, but also ensuring there is sustainable development of local natural resources.
