Eco-friendly grandpa Huang Zhao-shi

The courtyard of 70-year-old Huang Zhao-shi’s (黃昭夫) home in Shuishang Township, Chiayi County, is decorated with windmills created from recycled materials. Engaged in eco-friendly creations for the last 30 years, he has produced all kinds of ingeniously crafted toys that children simply adore – for two generations, the Huang family has not needed to buy toys. Huang Zhao-shi has traveled the length and breadth of Taiwan, including the outlying islands of Penghu, to spread the importance of environmental awareness.

Through helping to collect plastic bottles and tidying the messy workshop, his wife Lin Sheng-hua (林勝華), provides assistance from the sidelines, allowing her husband to focus on developing ideas for environmental protection. After retiring from the teaching profession, Huang Zhao-shi began using the internet to spread his ideas, which received a lot of positive feedback. With the hope of planting more seeds of environmental change, this semester he has accepted a teaching position at Chiayi community college.

在嘉義縣水上鄉，70歲的黃昭夫家中，庭院角落都是以環保回收物製成的風車裝飾，他從事環保創作30年，各式各樣別具巧思的環保玩具讓孩子愛不釋手，黃家已經二代都不需花錢買玩具了。黃昭夫更走過台灣全島和澎湖離島，宣導環保的重要。妻子林勝華也從旁協助，有時幫忙收集寶特瓶，有時整理雜亂的工作室，希望先生能專注於環保玩具的研發。黃昭夫從教職退休後，也善用網路資源從事理念推廣，獲得不少迴響，這學期他更獲聘在嘉義市社區大學開課，希望培育更多的環保種子教師。
