Local ecological restoration alliance protects Yangmingshan US Military Housing
In 1951, the US armed forces constructed 217 houses in Yangmingshan (陽明山), Taipei City; following the US’s withdrawal from Taiwan, the houses were abandoned for many years. With the aim of restoring the original appearance and setting of the houses, local residents in Shanzaihou (山仔后) Village formed ‘Yangmingshan Historical Building – Eco Village Preservation & Education Alliance.’ The alliance has raised various activities, including ‘reality theatre,’ and oral history through living history and living architecture, which give visitors a real taste of the era.
Through cooperating in campus-based service-learning courses, the alliance has allowed many more young people to become acquainted with the historical heritage and ecology of Yangmingshan, giving students a first-hand experience of the lasting cultural ambiance of the area.
