School faces closure crisis – Teachers and students from Beilin Elementary School organize 11-day island tour

At the start of this year, Hualian’s Beiling Elementary School, which has a total of forty people, was put on a list of schools set for closure. After discussions, students decided to embark on a tour of the island and observe other elementary schools that have managed to forge their own special character. The students have witnessed a great deal of encouragement along the way, and after earning half of the expenses for the excursion by making and selling dumplings, a large sum of money was donated by a generous well wisher in Pingtung, who was impressed by the kids’ fight to save their school.

今年年初全校約40人的花蓮縣北林國小被列入廢校觀察名單，學生討論後決定環島觀摩其他特色小校，發展自身特色為母校尋求一線生機。環島旅費半數來自學生包水餃販售所得，一路上收到許多人的鼓勵，環島至屏東更有一位阿姨肯定他們為學校做的努力，大方贊助學生旅費。
