Opening the secret history of quinquennial Maljeveq festival in Gulou
Held by the Gailin clan every 5 years in Gulou village, Maljeveq festival is a tribal gathering that celebrates traditional dance and the sharing of wine with participating family and friends. The first cup of wine at the festival is considered particularly special and in recent years has been given to Director Gao Wei-ren (高偉仁) from the Ruxiguvan clan – called Terudj in Paiwanese. Director Gao Wei-ren is a descendent of the 1970 county mayor, Gao De-cheng (高德成) – known as Sapiya in Paiwanese – who helped revive the traditional Paiwanese Maljeveq festival in Gulou village. As a mark of gratitude, Gao De-cheng and his descendants are bestowed with the honor of drinking the first cup of wine at the festival.
Back in 1970, with aspirations of restoring the Maljeveq festival, the tribal chief, elders and general members of the tribe asked the then county mayor Gao De-cheng to help them make an application to the authorities. Following approval, however, Giring Saselep, Tjiljuvekan Satjivuluan and some village elders were surprisingly reported to the police and faced a court action. Fortunately, in the end, their names were cleared and the court action dropped. Ever since that time, the Paiwan’s quinquennial Maljeveq festival has been held without any prohibition, allowing the festival to flourish in areas all around the country.
