Drawing from 45 degrees –– Zheng Hui-lian’s high school graduation exhibition and book release
Born in 1996, Zheng Hui-lian (鄭慧蓮) fell ill and became paralyzed at just 5 years old. Today, at the age of 18, Zheng Hui-lian has already won three major awards, put on nineteen exhibitions, and released two books – one of them a picture book. On the eve of graduation from National Chiayi Special School, Zheng Hui-lian has already secured a study place in Nanhua University.
Despite the fact that Zheng Hui-lian’s paralysis from the neck down and reliance on a respirator to sustain her life put attending school out of the question for her, the family never abandoned the prospect of study and opted for homeschooling. Sitting inclined to an upward angle of 45 degrees with painting brush clasped in her mouth, stroke by stoke, Zheng Hui-lian slowly completes her artworks. Zheng Hui-lian has never compromised herself over the harsh deck of cards life dealt her, but instead broken through her physical limitations and dedicated her life to painting. Winner of a ‘President's Education Award’, Chou Ta Kuan Foundation’s ‘Global Love of Lives Award’ and the 2013 Ministry of Culture’s Enable Prize, Zheng Hui-lian is real educational example of success.
