Should Lugang’s “Gold & Silver Hall” be given national heritage status? New owner lambasted

Through the help of local civic organizations, the Japanese-era mansion “Gold & Silver Hall (金銀廳)” was temporarily given national heritage status in March of this year. However, at the first Cultural Heritage Investigation Meeting convened on July 9, the new landlord aired his belief that the building does not have any remaining conservation value.

The civic organization Lugang Preservation Association (保鹿運動協會), however, stressed that following the “Save the Gold & Silver Hall” protest movement, which attracted huge citizen participation, the building is now considered a place of common property and should be retained. After failing to reach a consensus with the current landlord at the meeting, Changhua County Cultural Affairs Director Wu Lan-mei (吳蘭梅) said that the case needed more investigation and discussion, and that a further meeting would be held in September.
