Restoration of firefly habitat in Cui Lake – Taipei “Your Shoot”
On Saturday the 16th of April, PTS’s PeoPo Citizen Journalism Platform collaborated with Wenshan Community College to raise the latest Your Shoot event. After familiarizing themselves with the restoration of Cui Lake, the 80-plus participating citizen journalists began reporting to help raise awareness of ecological issues.
Concealed within Taipei’s Mucha Park, Cui Lake is a rare natural wetland in the heart the city. Unfortunately, in addition to poor management over a long period of time, the reckless release of invasive alien species into the pond has seriously endangered the habitat of indigenous species. In a bid to rectify the problem, Wenshan Wetland Exploration Workshop (文山社大濕地探索工作坊) initiated lake restoration work in 2012.
During the restoration operation, the first consideration was safeguarding the ecology and minimizing impact on the environment. In addition to using biodegradable hemp sacks and twine, volunteers worked in relay to courageously take on the laborious job of transporting accumulated pond sludge. Over and above the efforts of students from Wenshan Community College and volunteers, the Chief of Village and local residents also actively participated. This common effort will ensure that many organisms and fireflies return to Cui Lake, and that local residents can enjoy an improved leisure environment.
