At a small classroom in Taipei’s Zhongshan District, dozens of Filipino migrant workers sit on the ground focused on a computer assembly class. The class is just one of many classes freely taught at Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO). Taipei MECO provides a diverse range of training courses, including baking and pastry making, food processing, computer assembly, design and tailoring, jewelry production and so on.

The courses equip migrant workers with the skills to open their own business when they return home. In addition, Chinese courses are taught over a period of 10 Sundays, allowing them to get a better understanding of the Mandarin language and communicate more effectively with employers. Many migrant workers embrace a dream of opening a business one day, and yearn for a friendlier working environment. By enhancing their abilities through learning, they hope to change their destiny.
