The rice harvest season is now underway in Lanyang Plain. In former years, following the harvest straw would be retained as an important source of fuel for cooking food and boiling water. However, the character of rural life has transformed a great deal over the years and today such scenes are quite rare. Although straw’s function as a major form of fuel in farming communities no longer exists, today it is being used to make creative paintings, mixed with soil to form organic fertilizer, and even used to make “stone skimmers,” fashioning an entirely new use and value for this age-old material.

目前正是蘭陽平原稻米收割的季節，以往稻子收成後，稻草是農家煮飯、燒水的主要燃料。不過，隨著農村生活型態改變，這樣的情形已經相當少見。雖然稻草做為農家主要燃料的功能已經不復存在，但利用稻草發揮創意做成稻草畫，甚至與泥土混和成了有機肥料，還可以用來「打水漂」，也創造了稻草的另一項價值。
