The unrelinquishable feather duster
Located in Changhua’s Puyan Township, Fengze Village is the home of Taiwan’s elegant feather duster. The first person in Fengze Village to make feather dusters learned the art from a beggar in the temple’s yard, and Chen Zhong-lu (陳忠露) inherited the art from his father. In its heyday, the village was brimming with experts making feather dusters, with each and every family engaged in the art. Today, however, Chen Zhong-lu and his wife Xu Quan-ying (許全英), who have been making feather dusters for over half a century, remain the last bastion of this traditional art in the village. Chen Zhong-lu said he couldn't bear to give up the art that his father handed down to him; today, Chen Zhong-lu and his wife hope that through receiving photography groups and other interested parties, many more people will get to know about this quaint part of Taiwan’s traditional culture.
