Running alongside Laonong River, Provincial Highway 27 provides stunning vistas of Eighteen Arhats Mountain off in the distance. On the short 11 to 15km section of the highway upstream from Kaohsiung’s Liugui District, the road is straddled with over three hundred mango trees aged in excess of fifty years. Each summer, it has become a local tradition for residents to harvest the tasty green mangoes with self-crafted devices.

This year, the Directorate General of Highways (DGH) held two public hearings regarding the widening of Highway 27, at which time it was hastily decided to move hundreds of the mango trees. Recently, however, holes were found on 124 of the trees, leading to suspicion that poison has been used. It is a sad indictment of our time that the life force from these 50-year-old trees could be so wantonly severed without rhyme or reason.
