Writing songs for our homeland – Taijiang people sing the local history
Since the beginning of last year, Taijiang Branch of Tainan Community University and Hai-wei Tsao-Huang Temple have not only been promoting the One Village, One Temple music band but also opened a singing class called “Sing your First Song”. In one class, youngsters and elderly residents from the local community studied for a whole semester under legendary singer-songwriter and Golden Melody Awards’ nominee, Hsieh Ming-Yu (謝銘祐), during which time they wrote “Taijang People”, a song depicting the traditional farming life of Taijiang people.
Tainan City Cultural Affairs Bureau, Hai-wei Tsao-Huang Temple and Taijiang Branch of Tainan Community University formally released the song at Hai-wei Tsao-Huang Temple, where Anqing Elementary School Choir and teacher Hsieh Ming-Yu and classmates together sang “Taijiang People” for the first time.
Teacher Hsieh Ming-Yu said he very much supports the vision of local people writing local songs. When the “Sing your First Song” class began, all of the Taijiang participants were complete novices in songwriting; however, after a short period of time, many were using the theme of Taijiang and its people to write songs in Taiwanese Hokkien. After humming out the song, modifying lyrics, rhythm, and feel, the song was finally born. Hsieh Ming-Yu added that he strongly encourages Taijiang kids to get involved in Taijiang People’s Orchestra and together sing local songs.
