Over the years, people able to the play the bamboo drum have gotten fewer by the year and the number of village seniors proficient in playing this traditional instrument can be counted on the fingers of one hand. As a way of reviving the fond memories of village seniors, children from the local elementary school set up a “bamboo” band and have been learning to play a number of bamboo instruments, including the bamboo drum. Despite the children’s willingness to pick up the batten of this local tradition, the villagers of Taiping are still deeply concerned over the all-pervasive trend towards fewer children.
