The silver salt process on the verge of being lost
From roll upon roll of negatives to shelves crammed full of photography books, this is no ordinary photography studio. Owner of the studio, Chen Feng-yi (陳豐毅), who uses the traditional silver salt process, said it is precisely the difficulty in predicting chemical changes in the silver salt process, and therefore the unpredictability in contrast, particles, and even brightness, that makes this type of film processing so appealing.
The ability of this process to transform old negatives into lasting memories with a tangible and palpable existence sets them apart from their digital counterparts. Despite the laboriousness of silver salt processing, it has been conveying poignant moments that touch our hearts and nourish our souls for generations.
