Wanderer returns home to the family business
When Huang Zheng-xiang (黃正祥) first entered the workforce as a young man, he took a job in the tourism industry; however, after several years of wandering, he decided it was unsuitable for him and returned to the familiar family hog business. After accumulating years of experience, he worked to save funds for the construction of his own pig farm.
Compared with traditional pig farms, Huang Zheng-xiang chooses to use automatic feeding equipment and has also installed negative pressure artificial ventilation screens to help heat-fearing pigs cope with the blistering temperatures of summer. Once water is released from the screens, fans at the opposite side of the barn draw air to produce a cool breeze throughout the space.
There are currently more than 7,000 pig farms in Taiwan, the majority of which are small-scale operations. With the continual advancement in technology, the future pig industry is bound to veer towards a high-tech, large-scale production model. If small-scale pig farmers hope to survive they must find a way to adapt to these inevitable future developments.
