Kongodavange Village – Post-disaster reconstruction warriors
Kongodavange, aka Duona Tribal Village, is located in an area of marshland in the western part of Benlu Mountain on Taiwan’s Central Range; at about 450 meters above sea level, it is the deepest village in the Maolin area of Kaohsiung. Despite the havoc typhoon Morakot inflicted on their homeland, the tribe never gave up hope and have endeavored to rebuild their homes, bravely facing the future.
In 2009, typhoon Morakot wreaked destruction on Duona Tribal Village, unleashing unprecedented flooding and landslides and temporarily cutting the tribe off from the outside world. The natural hot springs in local rivers were obliterated, abruptly ending a once reliable source of income from homestays and tourism and snatching away the people's livelihoods.
Although today's Duona isn’t as prosperous or busy as before, residents have not given up and are still trying to use their own meager strength to direct the entire tribe's vigor. Hopefully, one day, through the spirit of the Rukai warriors, they will find pride in Duona Tribal Village again.
