3D mosaic – Temple Art of Jiannian.
As the bedrock of spiritual belief in Taiwan, temples adorned with sacred and grand images have a special place in our hearts. The ornately carved beams of temples are decorated with meaningful images that hasten good fortune and chase away evil. Amazingly, if you carefully observe the gods and images on stunning temple roofs, it becomes apparent that they are mosaics put together piece by piece.
Huang Tuo-wei (黃拓維) is a master of Jiannian, a form of "cut-and-stick” fragmented ceramic art which originated in southern Chinese architecture and later entered Taiwan when it was colonized. Today, this form of fragmented ceramic art has reached a pinnacle in Taiwan.
Huang Tuo-wei said that to create a dragon paw in the past, you had first to mold a paw, prepare the ceramic fragments, and then and stick them together. Today, however, with factory-made molds saving both time and money, the traditional skills of master artisans are gradually being replaced. Despite this, Huang Tuo-wei feels it is essential to preserve such valuable, high-quality works and the traditional skills of the craft.

作為台灣傳統信仰中心的廟宇,一直以神聖隆重的形象屹立於我們心中。廟宇的雕樑畫棟,常富含寓意或為趨福避邪驅福避邪。然而特別的是,若曾仔細觀摩,會注意到富麗堂皇的屋頂上所雕刻的各座神祉,皆是由一片片碗片所「拼」出來的。
剪黏工藝師黃拓維說道,主要剪黏是發源於中國南方建築的裝飾工藝,後來因為台灣被殖民所以傳入,現在在台灣發展的算是完整。
黃拓維描述以前做一隻龍的手,要先泥塑一個手,剪好碗片再黏上去,但現在直接用工廠做的模組,不僅省掉很多工,價錢也比較便宜。傳統比較費工的方式就會漸漸被這樣的材料取代。找出好的東西,然後加以保留具有價值的作品跟要保存的工法,這部分是應該好好保存下來。
