Memories of tasty late-night cuisine on “Congee Street”
Offering a delicious selection of food, including sweet potato congee and a variety of delicious side dishes, Taiwan's traditional "congee with side dishes" cuisine has been a popular late-night choice for the past 30 years. Fuxing South Road, known locally as "Congee Street," is the first destination for Taipeiers looking to savor some late-night congee with side dishes. Today, however, with an increasing number of eateries calling it a day and turning out the lights for good, the street has witnessed a dramatic transformation.
Despite the rich selection of tasty dishes with good-sized servings, in the highly competitive late-night food market, the proportion of young people choosing to eat congee with side dishes is relatively small.
Nowadays, congee with side dishes has become synonymous with "nostalgia." Ensuring the survival of traditional Taiwanese food in today's competitive late-night food market is not only a challenge for restaurateurs but also for ordinary Taipei residents and how much they cherish the memory of such traditional late-night eateries.
