Taiwan sees “retaliatory tourism” during the pandemic
Taiwan’s tourism industry has had to bear the brunt of COVID-19, but with the easing of pandemic restrictions, the summer vacation saw an explosion of domestic tourism. Many popular attractions in the outlying islands have become favored tourist destinations, but local businesses have been unable to cope with the large numbers of tourists, a phenomenon netizens have dubbed “retaliatory tourism.”
The government has been promoting tourism through the Triplicate Stimulus Coupons scheme and “safe to travel” subsidies, encouraging people to get out more and revitalize the economy. At the same time, it has also reminded people about the importance of cooperating with the current pandemic prevention policy and taking all necessary measures to stay safe while having fun.
