Guardian of the shadows integrates new elements into shadow play
The familiar sound of gongs, colorful lights, and lively puppets appear on the shadow screen - this is commonly known as shadow puppetry in Taiwan. The 100-year-old Tung Hua Skin Shadow Puppet Theater is essentially a family puppet theatre, and the current sixth-generation head Zhang Fu-guo (張榑國) was recently registered as "A Preserver of Cultural Heritage and Art" in Taiwan.
Passed down from generation to generation, every new head of theatre takes over the business from their father. As with everything, the passage of time brings changes in society and audience's viewing preferences change likewise. In addition to possessing traditional cultural assets, the theatre also incorporates current affairs into its shadow puppetry. By adapting the theme and dialogues to meet different audiences' needs, Tung Hua Skin Shadow Puppet Theater has become a hit with all age groups, old and young.
