Making a home for urban owls
As the weather cools, urban owls begin breeding early in the fall. "We allow members to take nest boxes they make back home and hang them in a nearby tree, giving Japanese scops owls, mountain scops owls, and other owls an opportunity to use them. If trainees do not take their nest boxes home, we hang them on trees in our partner elementary schools," said He Jing-han from Taiwan Environmental Information Association.
The installation of nest boxes provides temporary habitat to aid conservation, but the ultimate goal is to preserve more large trees and tree holes for owls to breed so that people and owls can coexist harmoniously in this urban environment.
