Mermaid show combines ocean trash issue to promote marine education
The mermaid performers transform into real-life mermaids from fairy tales, swimming freely in the water with beautiful fishtails. With decades of experience in diving, mermaid instructor Yang Hsin-yuan (楊心元) has established Taiwan Mermaid Art Academy (台灣人魚藝術學院), hoping to introduce more people to mermaid sports and underwater art through performance and teaching.
In addition to conveying power and beauty, Yang also actively promotes marine education. For two consecutive years, Yang has worked with the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology to combine mermaid performances with the issue of ocean waste, incorporating straws, plastic bags, and other common waste in her performances. Yang hopes that watching mermaid performances will help children learn more about the ocean and protect the environment.
