The historical trajectory of North Gate Station

Since the Japanese rule era, Chiayi’s North Gate Station has been used as a distribution center for timber transportation. Before the R.O.C. was established, the station was the depot and distribution center for freight on Alishan Forest Railway network. Everyday necessities for people living along the railway line traveled up the mountain from here, making it extremely important.

Red cypress was used as the main building material, but in 1998, a fire broke out which burned down 40% of the station. Fortunately, thanks to funding from the Forestry Administration, it was later restored. North Gate Station has witnessed the rise and fall of Alishan Forest Railway over the past century and today has become a key scenic spot in Chiayi City.

  嘉義北門車站從日治時期啟用做為木材運送集散地，在民國元年時期，銜接縱貫鐵路之前，北門車站是阿里山蒸汽小火車的起點，也是阿里山鐵路的貨運集散地，鐵路沿線的民生物資都由此上山，地位相當重要。

  車站整體建築以紅檜木作為主要建材，民國87年，北門車站遭祝融之災，燒毀了車站百分之四十，經由林管處撥款修復後得以維持原貌，如今成為嘉義市一景，見證森林鐵路百年來的興衰歲月。
