A home for buffalos in old age
When a person grows old, they can stay in a hospice center to enjoy their later years, but where can aging water buffaloes go? Lin Jia-liang, a 40-year-old farmer from Magong, Yunlin, who returned to his hometown in 2014, embarked on a journey to begin adopting and caring for old buffaloes after a serendipitous encounter. After four years of hard work to fulfill his dream, in 2022, he officially opened Yunlin's first buffalo hospice center, "Back to Tuku," saving elderly buffaloes from the fate of the slaughterhouse.
With the mechanization of agriculture, water buffaloes have gradually been replaced, and as they age, they become too difficult for frail elderly farmers to care for. To provide a place for more aging water buffaloes to spend their golden years, Lin Jia-liang relies on cultivating rice and selling naturally farmed rice products. Through this initiative, Lin has created a space where elderly water buffaloes can live freely and peacefully until the end of their days.
