Is your house water ‘garbage water’? Datun River pollution

Datun River trail in Sanzhi Township, New Taipei City is considered as one of the most beautiful areas in northern Taiwan, attracting hoards of visitors who enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Unfortunately, the large numbers of visitors to the area are leaving a sizeable amount of garbage behind that is impacting on the local resident’s drinking water source, which comes from the river. A public notice clearly states that barbequing is strictly prohibited, however everywhere one looks, the remains of barbeques can be seen strewn all over. What was once a beautifully pristine natural environment has been destroyed by trash - one of the nearby trees even being scorched by blazing-hot charcoal. Kind-hearted volunteers have come to clean up the garbage, but the locals have been left deeply saddened by the pollution.

 
Local residents are without piped water and therefore the influence from contamination of their water supply by this trash is extremely serious. Locals have been cleaning the area at regular intervals, however due to restrictions with plastic refuse bags in addition to numerous media channels hyping the area as a sightseeing spot and the nonchalant response from the local EPA, the trash situation in the area is getting progressively worse. Datun River trail is a rich natural resource that we shouldn’t allow to be ruined by trash. The pristine beauty of Datun can only be preserved through the joint protection and care of everyone who uses it.

新北市三芝鄉的大屯溪古道，有北台灣最美麗的古道之稱，迷人的景色吸引許多遊客，但這裡的溪水其實是附近居民的水源，大批觀光人潮卻帶來了大量的垃圾。告示 牌上明明寫著嚴禁烤肉，但溪邊到處都是烤肉遺留下來的殘骸，原本的美景全被垃圾給破壞，甚至在一旁的樹木也被炭火薰得焦黑。有好心的志工自願來清理垃圾， 但對於當地的汙染感到相當的痛心。

 
由於附近沒有自來水管線，因此當地居民的用水皆來自於大屯溪，而這些垃圾卻直接汙染了他們的水源，影響 程度相當的大。附近居民表示他們會定期前往清理，但因為塑膠袋規定的限制，加上媒體報導吸引了更多人潮，垃圾汙染的情況越來越嚴重，向環保局反應卻也沒有 太大成效。大屯溪孕育著豐富的自然資源，別讓垃圾破壞了生態，這樣美麗的環境需要靠大家一起來維持，才能保有它原始的風貌。
