This year on the 24th September, a story regarding the building of an oil refinery in Taoyuan’s High-Tech Industrial Park hit the headlines and aroused a storm of protest from locals. Guanyin Township has a surface area of 87.79 square kilometers or 8515 hectares, of which around 776 are already used as an industrial zone. The factories have brought with them a great deal of pollution and consequently lowered the quality of life for people living in the area. If plans for this high-pollution, high-energy consumption oil refinery go ahead then it is bound to have adverse affects on both the health of local people and their living environment. In response, a group of locals have formed an action group and begun fighting the plans through the launching of a 10,000-signature petition and a drama to draw attention to their plight. The group is asking citizens of the area to stand up and express their views, and warned that silence and apathy will only bring pollution and great devastation to the area.
