First provide seats then discuss comfort! – Don’t leave citizens without a ticket home
Early on the morning of the 4th January, armed with a guitar and some songs, a group of students and workers all living away from home congregated at Taipei Railway Station. The song lyrics “Standing on the train to Taipei”, which echoed throughout the station, point to the difficult and tiresome journey people traveling home at peak periods must experience. The songs expressed how the people of Hualian often face transportation problems and are reliant on Taiwan Railways for mobility. Unfortunately, however, citizens often face great difficulty in purchasing tickets, not to mention trying to get a ‘seated’ ticket, and so it goes without saying that if one does succeed in snatching a ticket then you are considered as being incredibly lucky.
Those who fail to get their hands on a ticket must give up the idea of traveling home to visit their loved ones. The motivation for ‘civil media’ to hold a demonstration was to urge Taiwan Railways to improve the service by implementing an increase in ticket allocation on lines to Hualian, Taitung and the South to correspond with high ticket demand at peak traveling periods. These improvements to the service can hopefully resolve ticket problems that frequently arise around festivals and national vacations.
