Elderly artist embellishes annual Mazu procession with a sense of poetic style
The art of Yi-Ge (藝閣) is the sine qua non of Beigang Chaotian Temple’s (北港朝天宮) annual Mazu (媽祖) activities. Elderly Beigang artist, Yan San-tai (顏三泰), is currently in the midst of putting the finishing touches to this year’s art parade. Yi-Ge is an elegant and classical style of traditional art that decorates cars for participation in various folk parades.
For the Mazu activities, all the artwork must be kept under wraps until the actual day of the parade, when the ornately carved wooden reliefs and historical landscape paintings are unveiled before Mazu and worshippers - a sight that regularly causes onlookers to marvel at the artistic brilliance. The bearing and deportment that participants display during the parade – both children and adults - is only possible through intensive training. This year’s Beigang Chaotian Temple’s annual Mazu activities will take place on the 28th and 29th of April.
