City Government accused of trampling over judicial process after damaging trees
On July 10, Chiang-Tsui tree sitters arrived at New Taipei District Prosecutors Office (新北市地檢署) to petition the local government over the cutting of Chiang-Tsui trees and damaging public property. At a press conference held outside before court proceedings began, the city government was accused of not only failing to provide an inspection report within 14 days of its first site inspection on June 4, but then on June 21, trying to mask tree cutting as “tree transplanting”.
Chiang-Tsui tree sitters stressed that from June 21 to June 26, in addition to causing the death of one and seriously damaging seven old trees during transplanting, a further 32 trees were transplanted in blistering temperatures of between 32 and 35 degrees; such high temperatures are considered extremely unsuitable for transplanting work.
In light of the fact the obligatory transplanting specifications for such trees were nonchalantly disregarded and instead replaced with crude and callous methods, calls into question the role of New Taipei City Government, which has quite clearly trampled over the judicial process and its system of investigation.
