Goalball
Goalball (盲人門球) is a sport for the visually impaired in the Paralympic Games and an extremely popular for those with visual impairments in foreign countries. Its method of scoring is similar to that of soccer; however, there are a number of areas that are markedly different: each team is limited to three players; players rely on various sounds emitted from the ball to detect its direction and speed; boundary lines on the soccer field are designed to enable players to recognize them by touch.
Currently, Taipei City has only one Goalball club that trains visually impaired people to play the sport. Although Taiwan has a school specifically geared to train the sport and has even had international success in various competitions, the sport has yet to obtain any amount of sizeable popularity in the country. The current poor environment for learning Goalball is an illustration of Taiwan’s failure to provide accessible spaces or equipment. However, this kind of problem is not merely the fault of government departments, and requires the attention and understanding of society at large.
