Pingtung ‘Your Shoot’–The story of Gong-He Military Village
This April, PeoPo’s ‘Your Shoot’ traveled south to Gong-He Military Village in Donggang Township, Pingtung County. Located in the center of Donggang, the military dependent’s village was used by Japanese naval air squadrons during Japan’s occupation of Taiwan. This leafy residential area acts as precious green lungs for the city and is valued as an area of important cultural heritage by both Taiwanese and Japanese scholars.
Beginning in 2011, however, a series of regeneration works and road-widening projects have pushed Gong-He Village to crisis point. In a bid to protect the area and accompanying magnificent trees, people involved in the cultural scene have raised various activities. In addition, over the last few years, numerous citizen journalists have covered the story, bringing public attention to the issue. At this latest PeoPo ‘Your Shoot’ activity, which saw the participation of over 50 citizen journalists and many local residents, under the guidance of local volunteers, the story of Gong-He Village was brought to life through the power of the lens.
