October 4th Housing Movement – CJ report
In response to this year’s World Habitat Day (世界人居日) on October 6, a ‘sleepover’ was organized by Housing Movement on October 4 at the most expensive housing development in Taiwan – the Palace complex (帝寶) on Renai Road.
Lying on the road outside the Palace complex, close to 10,000 protesters spent the night chanting slogans such as “Down with plutocracy, we want fairness!” Housing Movement promises to fully expose the property details of government officials and elected representatives, inspect the related political views of election candidates and ensure post-election accountability, as well as promote the movement’s five main demands for amendments to the law.
One of Housing Movement’s five main demands, “the right to adequate housing being included in the Constitution,” is important because even though the government has already agreed and signed two conventions, only by ensuring that the right to adequate housing is included in the Constitution, can the real problem be resolved: the main emphasis of reforming the nation’s property tax system is a special property tax for the richest 5% of people. Adopting this measure will allow reasonable adjustments in property prices without triggering panic in the market.

Occupy The Palace #HousingMovement Taipei(Sky Lee)
