‘Cats, Dogs and Pets Street’
Located adjacent to Taipei’s Tonghua Night Market (通化夜市), ‘Cats, Dogs and Pets Street’ attracts the interest of many passersby to the area. However, veterinarians indicate that the intense bright lights inside pet shops, limited mobility for animals and overly long opening times – often until 2am in the morning – may cause low immunity in the animals as well as affect their rest and development.
The adverse affects of such conditions over long periods of time include; sneezing; persistent runny noses; the potential for fever; and even the spread of infectious diseases. Animal protection groups oppose the operating methods of such pet shop business, but since pet shop laws lack clarity, proprietors have amble space to evade regulations. Animal protection groups stress their firm opposition to the overall operations of pet shops and appeal for people to adopt animals instead of buying them, thus putting an end to this vicious cycle.
