Yu Da University of Science and Technology illegally lays off staff - The Union indicates Ministry of Education is jointly responsible

On the 14th of January ten people from The Union (台灣高等教育產業工會) held a press conference over the impending laying off of ten teachers from Yu Da University of Science and Technology (育達科技大學) scheduled for the 15th. Dissatisfied about being laid off without reason and being denied the opportunity to respond, the teachers are demanding that the Ministry of Education immediately revokes their illegal dismissals, and that the university’s application for dismissal and evidence that the school attempted to find suitable placements for the teachers is made public. Executive Officer from the Ministry of Education’s Department of Technical and Vocational Education, Jiang Xiu-zhu (姜秀珠), came forward to explain that based on the autonomy of universities, school teachers dissatisfied with being laid off can file a complaint or go through the judicial process. 

The Union’s criticisms includes: Yu Da University of Science and Technology has a large operating surplus; with 6,778 students at the school in the year 2013, it was the integration of various departments that caused an excess of manpower – this excess manpower should be used in teaching small specialist classes; there should be no arbitrary staff layoffs. The Ministry of Education should immediately correct the improper sanctioning of teacher layoffs, thereby protecting the working rights of teachers at the school and the rights to education of students.

育達科大違法裁員 高教工會指教育部是幫兇

台灣高等教育產業工會等10多人，1月14日舉辦記者會，有10位育達科技大學教師15日將被裁員，教師不滿為何被裁員又無答辯機會，要求教育部立即撤回違法裁員核准，公布育達裁員申請理由與安置事證。教育部技職司專門委員姜秀珠出面說明，基於大學自主，若教師對校方資遣處置過程不滿，可以提出行政申訴或透過司法程序提告。

高教工會批評：育達科大盈餘豐厚，學生在102學年度仍有6,778人，系所整併後導致有多餘人力，應用於推動小班化的精緻教學，不該藉機任意裁員。教育部應立即修正不當的裁員核准處分，保障育達教師的工作權與學生的受教權。
