With increasing numbers of tourists visiting Taiwan each year, the incredible beauty of Taiwan’s forests and beaches is being marred by increasing amounts of litter. Fortunately, enthusiastic nature lovers from all around the country are using various methods to clean up litter, transforming their passion for the land into a powerful force in maintaining a clean environment. It is hoped that such actions will serve as a catalyst to encourage more volunteers to come forward and take part in environmental activities.

The citizen journalist reported on four young people from Taipei, who have been using their own weekends to clean up litter from the surrounding hills. The students have been inspired by physical education teacher Arnold, a living example for the promotion of environmental education. The students’ actions have gained a great deal of praise from local hikers, who would also like to see people refrain from indiscriminately throwing litter away. The students wish to remind everyone that apart from one’s footprints, nothing else should be left on the mountain; only then can we fully enjoy nature in its original pristine beauty.
