“Compassion bread” delivery service – Suplus goods aid the vulnerable
Min-le Village is located in New Taipei City’s Yonghe District. The local borough chief, Liu Shan-zhen (劉善珍), spends most of her time shuttling throughout Yonghe delivering over one hundred portions of “compassion bread” for the needy each day. She has been delivering the bread for over five years, which amounts to over 150,000 portions. Recipients of the bread include low-income families, Yonghe’s Rongguang Orphanage, the Foundation for Children with Developmental Delays and street cleaners.
Working together with two bakeries in Yonghe, “Kaori Bakery n Coffee” and “Xiao-Mai-Jia Bakery,” each afternoon Liu Shan-zhen arrives at the bakeries to pack surplus bread into boxes and tie them to motorcycles ready for delivery. The bread is then transported through the streets of Yonghe to over one hundred people in need. Wu Yan-jun (吳彥均), owner of Kaori Bakery n Coffee said: “Our bakery insists on not selling bread from the day before, so we looked for a channel to donate surplus bread to in order to avoid waste. We found the borough chief, Liu Shan-zhen, and donated the bread to her in the hope that this small offering would attract more substantial donations and highlight the need for further resources.”
