Bagua Mountain – Satoyama protects raptors’ natural habitat
In April each year, protected raptors and grey-faced buzzards pass through Bagua Mountain in Changhua County, providing onlookers with a breathtaking spectacle.
Formerly, the grey-faced buzzard sustained heavy hunting pressure while crossing the mountainous region; however, thanks to the efforts of the government and NGOs in publicizing and strengthening conservation work in recent years, the gray-faced buzzard is now a welcome guest in Changhua County and no longer hunted. As a consequence, the area has witnessed a radical transformation and is now affectionately known as “Buzzard Bagua” to birders and locals. Each year, birding associations from around the country come to enjoy the spectacle and promote conservation on Bagua Mountain. This year, the Leopard Cat Family of Nantou made a special visit to raise awareness of Leopard Cat conservation work, helping to further deepen the concept of environmental protection in the hearts and minds of Taiwanese people.
