Raising oysters, catching fish, promoting tourism - Magical Waisanding Sandbar
Formed from alluvial sediment deposits coming off the Zhuoshui River,
Waisanding Sand Bar is the largest sandbar on the outlying coastal islands of
Taiwan. Under the influence of waves, coastal currents and the northeast monsoon,
the sandbar literally moves, on average drifting 60 to 70 meters southwest each
year, which is why it is also called, “the moving land”.
In the last few years, industrious local fishermen have been conducting tours
of the rich ecological surroundings and sharing their knowledge about the customs
and traditions of the local people with tourists, slowly forging out a tourism
industry. Led by the captain, visitors can take a ‘tourist’ fishing boat out onto
the ocean, and step foot on ‘the moving land’ - Waisanding Sand Bar. Dongshih in
Chiayi is renowned for its oyster farming, and with the pristine water allowing
oysters to grow plump and sweat it is no surprise that the vast majority of Taiwanese
oysters are raised in the area. An absence of human disturbance has helped transform
Waisanding Sandbar into a bird paradise, which attracts hundreds of species of migratory
birds each year, and allows visitors to enjoy the beauty of such an abundant ecological
environment.
