Hsinchu Wufeng Hunter School – Passing on Atayal hunting culture

The narrow and winding Nanqing Highway in Hsinchu County snakes through stunning mountainous scenery and eventually arrives at the tribal village of Maybalay. This tribal village is home to Wufeng Hunter School, which teaches traditional Atayal hunting culture. In the past, the Atayal people mainly survived on hunting, but today, because of severe Sinicization and population outflow, the ancient survival skills of the Atayal are slowly being lost.

Upon reaching adulthood and entering society, many Atayal youths migrate to urban areas to find employment and develop. Population outflow and Sinicization of indigenous peoples has resulted in concerns about a cultural breakdown, which is having had a significant impact on indigenous tribal communities. Fortunately, some young people are choosing to return home to find a sense of belonging. Upholding their beliefs and striving to protect their land, these youngsters are actively promoting their tribal traditions, so that more people get to see the depth and wisdom of indigenous culture.

新竹五峰獵人學校 傳承泰雅狩獵文化

蜿蜒小路，群山圍繞，沿著南清公路來到新竹縣五峰鄉，五峰和平部落有間傳授泰雅狩獵文化的獵人學校。早期泰雅族以狩獵維生，現在卻因族群漢化嚴重、部落族人去留問題，導致這項擁有百年歷史的生存技能慢慢流失。

許多泰雅青年出社會後都往都市發展，部落人口流失和原住民漢化嚴重，造成文化斷層的擔憂，對部落也是一大衝擊。所幸有群年輕族人利用自己的力量，返鄉找尋歸屬感，秉持信念，並且盡自己最大的能力守護這塊土地，讓傳統積極推廣，使更多人看見。
