The first-generation mobile library was donated by Lin Hwai-min (林懷民), the founder of Cloud Gate Theater. After providing reading services for 19 years, it was finally decommissioned in 2016. Now, the second-generation mobile library is set to hit the road in March, when it will tour the community of Xingang and the local elementary school.
Thanks to mobile library tours, children have the opportunity to borrow books and partake in the joy of reading, even in remote schools. School teachers use class time to guide children on how to borrow books and to improve reading skills. In addition to traveling to remote elementary schools, the mobile library will also interact with elders in different communities - reading picture books and sharing is another way of providing companionship.
Restarting mobile library tours continues the long-standing work to foster a culture of reading within society. The tours help facilitate interactions between different age groups and ethnic groups so that children and elders in rural areas can benefit from reading and sharing.
